The spotlight on...Drop Zone

Drop Zone Youth Project in Barrow in Furness was founded to educate young people through leisure time activities so to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.

What services does your organisation offer?

Drop Zone said: "Drop Zone offers a comprehensive range of support for young people through youth work delivery, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, plus (LGBTQ+) support for both young people and adults, extended education provision, mental health support, training, partnership working. We also undertake extensive detached work alongside partners to support young people within their own environments, tackle anti-social behaviour and offer opportunities."

How many people use your service every year?

Drop Zone said: "We have over 250 people accessing Drop Zone every year."

Can you tell us about any future projects?

Drop Zone said: "We are working with partner agencies to secure multi-agency funding to address need within the local area.  We have secured funding to support mental health and also, alongside Northern Rail, undertake a piece of work to develop a part of a local station. 

"We also delivered a pilot knife crime project in a local secondary school before the summer holidays and are looking to develop this and a training package for all schools."

Feedback from people using the service:

“I have struggled with lockdown and had a meltdown which is why the police were called. I just wanted somewhere I could go to be myself and feel safe and this is really good, makes me feel a lot happier.”

“The support my son has received has definitely improved his mood and being able to see someone face-to-face has give him and us some respite."

Are there any opportunities to get involved?

Drop Zone said: "All our provision, excluding education, has an open door policy so young people can access      support and activities without any barriers. We also offer volunteer opportunities, placements for student social workers and the police.
