New Initiative in Millom 'The Big Baggy T-Shirt Club'

Date posted: 23rd September 2022

A new exercise class launched last week in Millom called 'The Big Baggy T-Shirt Club' aimed specifically for those with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) who feel unable to visit a normal gym.

The class is designed for people to lose weight and regain their confidence if they have put on weight over covid or find themselves heavier than in recent years.

The initiative is a joint venture between Millom Integrated Care Community (ICC) and Millom Recreation Centre.

The club takes place every Friday from 4pm to 4.45pm at Millom Recreation Centre, Lancashire Road, Millom, LA18 4AW.  Sessions cost £1 and you can book your place at https://bookwhen.com/mrc

Jenny Riley, Development Lead for Millom ICC, said: “As a plus sized female this couldn’t be better for myself and fellow Millom residents with a high BMI. Going to a normal gym is not an option for me as I simply do not have the confidence to walk through the doors due to derogatory comments and looks and low esteem. This club is different. There is no ridicule or scorn aimed at my body as we are all different shapes and sizes here. We all have matching T-Shirts and have bonded as a club who genuinely support each other through the session.”

Marion Giles, The Big Baggy T-Shirt Club Fitness Instructor and Trustee at Millom Recreation Centre, said: “It is a great opportunity for Millom Recreation Centre to work along-side Millom’s Integrated Care Community. The Club gives members of our community the chance to meet like-minded people, who may find it difficult, for whatever reason, to participate in a group fitness class. This is a relaxed, fun way to introduce activity into your lifestyle, taken at your own pace and to suit your own ability."

Sammie, who came to the first session, said: “I was very self-conscious but immediately felt at ease in the club. I really enjoyed doing exercise again and felt so much better about myself afterwards. I can’t wait until next week!”
