GP focus with Dr Richard Russell

Date posted: 27th May 2022

Our GPs are an important part of Bay Health Care Partners and here our GPs and primary care colleagues have the opportunity to talk about issues and specialties that they are working on or interested in.

This month Dr Richard Russell talks to us about men's health in advance of Men's Health Week

Dr Russell said: "This year Men's Health Week runs from June 13-19, and it's time for your own MOT. We've been through a lot these past couple of years. Covid has not gone away, but we are beginning to live with it. To do this, we need to be at the top of our game, physically and mentally.

"During the Pandemic GP visits fell, but this fall was higher for men than for women. Prostate Cancer diagnosis was down 29% in 2019-2020, this would normally be good news, but unfortunately this was because fewer people were seeing their doctor and therefore getting diagnosed."

Dr Russell added: "It is also a sad reality that that suicide continues to be a leading cause of death for young men in the UK, and mental health issues have increased during the last two years.

"One in five men die before the age of 65, a statistic we need to change urgently. Men's Health Forum have put together a DIY MOT - Your personal MOT needs to look at your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health. The CAN DO Manual brings together all the great ideas the Men's Health Champions have had for things we can all do to boost our mental wellbeing. It's available FREE during the week."
