Bay Health and Care Partners Stakeholder Newsletter Issue 6
Date posted: 1st December 2021Welcome to the sixth edition of our Bay Health and Care Partners (BHCP) newsletter where we will update you every month on the collaborative work that is taking place in Morecambe Bay’s Place-Based Partnership and the outcomes and benefits for communities. We would like to draw your attention to the public consultation that is taking place on the future of healthcare in South Lakeland and proposals that would see changes to how care is given to adults who need more support than can currently be provided by GPs or district nurses at home but don’t need to stay on an acute hospital ward. You can find out more at the BHCP website here.
You may already be aware that external reports into concerns about the clinical care provided by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust’s Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) and Urology services have been published. These reports were received at the Trust Board meeting in November and you can find out more information about the reports and the Trust’s responses for T&O here and for Urology here.
We would like to highlight the New Hospitals Programme and the response we have had from people who are interested in how it will affect primary care. A video has been created to address this which you can watch here.
As we move closer to winter we would urge all of our Partners to continue to share any resources around Avian flu, COVID boosters, flu vaccinations and NHS 111 to raise awareness amongst our communities and protect them over the coming months. To help reduce pressures on our hospitals and primary care over what is normally a busy period, it’s important that we all continue to promote to colleagues and our communities the resources available to support people through winter including winter resources from Cumbria and Lancashire county councils, mental health, crisis support, stocking your medicine cabinet and how to stay well this winter.
We’re delighted to see that a new pump track and play area has officially opened in Windermere which will benefit local people. This comes after four years of fundraising by South Lakeland District Council which owns the park and community group Windermere Park For All. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Kevin Lavery who has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Designate of the NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board by NHS England and NHS Improvement. You can read more about Kevin’s role at the BHCP website here.
As we come to a close we would like to wish you all a happy festive period and a Happy New Year, leaving you with some 'reflections of 2021' and 'hopes for 2022' from colleagues across the Bay. You can read these by clicking here.

Partners Transforming Services
Every month we will explore a different area of our programmes of work that are transforming services. This month we are highlighting the Morecambe Bay #SetForSurgery perioperative wellness programme which focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of patients before their surgery. It is a wide-ranging programme, co-designed by colleagues both in the hospital and the community, as well as patients and voluntary organisations. The programme is looking for volunteers to help signpost patients through their health and wellbeing journey. You can read more about the programme and the appeal for volunteers at the Bay Health and Care Partners website here.
Listening to our communities
We will listen to the voices of our communities and involve them in the development of services. Here we will highlight the work that is ongoing to engage with people across the Bay. In this edition, we focus on the launch of a procurement framework to support adult and older people’s Mental Health. Around 100 people from over 70 organisations across Lancashire and South Cumbria took part in the online launch of the Procurement Framework for the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE). The launch was led by the Executive and Senior Team at Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT) and supported by the Mental Health Integrated Community Care (MHICC) Programme Transformation team. The session allowed the attendees to hear about the programme, share views and find out about the potential opportunity through the details of the framework, along with information such as how to access the framework and timelines.
In brief, LSCFT has been successful in bidding for transformation funding from NHS England that will see them develop new models of integrated community mental health care across Lancashire and South Cumbria and as part of this bid, the VCFSE sector have been identified as key partners in this transformation. LSCFT is keen that this funding is used in such a way that complements existing voluntary sector services; rather than duplicating or replacing existing provision. Sufya, the MHICC Project Manager, is hoping to organise a final engagement session to provide details about the programme, if you would like to receive the details or if you have any queries about the framework, please contact Sufya via Sufya.Koli@lscft.nhs.uk
GP focus with Liz Butler
Our GPs are an important part of Bay Health Care Partners and here our GPs and primary care colleagues have the opportunity to talk about issues and specialties that they are working on or interested in. This month, Liz Butler, Practice Manager at Park View Surgery, Milnthorpe would like to highlight the fantastic work of the new Social Prescribing Team for the Carnforth & Milnthorpe Primary Care Network which relaunched in August. The team supports patients from Park View Surgery in Milnthorpe, Ash Trees Surgery in Carnforth and all outlying branch surgeries across a large area of 33,000 patients from Halton in Lancashire to Brigsteer in Cumbria. You can read the full feature with the Social Prescribing Team at the Bay Health and Care Partners (BHCP) website here.
The spotlight on...CADAS
Every month we will feature a different voluntary, community or faith sector organisation across the Bay. This time the spotlight is on… Cumbria Alcohol and Drug Advisory Service (CADAS).CADAS was founded in 1979 by a group
of concerned individuals and professionals who wanted to provide a service for the people of Cumbria who suffered from the effects of alcohol and drugs. You can read the full case study at the BHCP website here.
Celebrating our teams
There are a variety of roles across BHCP and other organisations we work with in the community. Here we shine the spotlight on the people who carry out a range of roles to keep our communities healthy and supported. Lucy Ellis is an Autism Pathway Navigator in North Lancashire for Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust. Lucy supports a team of learning disability nurses, speech and language therapists and psychologists who conduct school-age autism assessments. You can read more about Lucy's role at the BHCP website here.
ICCs update
Our Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) are integrated teams of health and care workers, voluntary organisations and wider community assets who work together to aim to improve physical and mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing and reduce health inequalities across an entire population. In this edition we look at the winners of the Lancaster Castle Collage Exhibition. Almost 300 participants and members of the public visited the story to view and vote for the winners who were Quernmore Primary School Years 5&6, Positive Futures North West and Ashton Manor. You can read the full story at the BHCP website here. The latest editions of the ICCs' newsletters can be read here.
