Women and families invited to learn more about their local maternity services

Women and families across South Cumbria and North Lancashire are being invited to learn more about the services available at Helme Chase Maternity Unit at a special event on Saturday 5 May.

The open day (the second to be held) will take place from 10am until 4pm in Helme Chase at Westmorland General Hospital, and will allow women and families who are currently using UHMBT’s maternity services, have used them in the past or who may use them in the future, to have a look around and speak to staff about the antenatal and postnatal services available in the unit – such as water births, aromatherapy, hypnobirthing, and Baby Feeding Cafés.

Highly skilled midwives, support workers and health visitors will be on hand to answer questions about pregnancy, birth and caring for a new baby, and it will also be a chance to meet other local mums that have previously used the services.

Sue Smith, Executive Chief Nurse, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Women and families are at the heart of everything we do at Morecambe Bay. We have made a lot of improvements to our maternity services based on what women and families have told us they want, so we are confident that we can offer the right service here for you and your baby.

“This open day is a chance for us to show off the fantastic services we offer at Helme Chase, and we hope to see as many local women and families there as possible.”

Helme Chase Maternity Unit is a midwifery-led unit that provides a tranquil and home-from-home environment, which allows mums to focus on their body and the baby. If women are assessed as having a low-risk pregnancy, i.e. unlikely to have any complications, they will be able to choose to give birth at Helme Chase. Women can give birth at Helme Chase 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supported by a midwife.
